Holidays dissolve old routines, which makes them the perfect time to build new ones. After several years of living on a tropical island, I'm convinced: nowhere does a morning practice take root faster than in the tropics.
Why morning wins here
- The coolness. Before 9–10 am the island is at its gentlest: soft light, fresh air, comfortable warmth. Even dynamic practice feels good.
- The quiet mind. Early in the day, your head isn't yet full of plans and messages. Attention returns to the body and breath almost by itself.
- The tone it sets. A day that starts with practice starts from calm, not from hurry. Students often say mornings become easier, and brighter.
A tiny holiday ritual
No heroics required. Try this simple sequence:
- Wake without an alarm, or with a gentle one. On holiday, you can.
- A glass of water and a few deep breaths on the terrace.
- 15–60 minutes of practice: joint warm-up, a few familiar poses, breathing, two minutes of stillness.
- Breakfast afterwards: practice on a light stomach simply feels better.
If you would rather have structure and company, join a morning group class. The island, the shared breath and an attentive teacher will do half the work for you.
Taking the habit home
The secret is not willpower but anchors: a fixed time (right after waking), a fixed place (a corner with your mat), a realistic length (even 15 minutes counts). One or two holiday weeks are enough for the chain to form. At home, you simply keep it going.
Our inner state is built from small daily choices: how we breathe, move, rest, and treat ourselves.
